A year later, I’m still figuring it out

When we moved into this house, I honestly thought we’d be mostly decorated within a few months.

Buy the furniture.

Hang the art.

Style the shelves.

Done.

Instead, here we are…a year later…and I’m still moving things around. I’m still deciding which artwork belongs on the walls. I’m still figuring out how I want each room to feel.

I’ve changed my mind more times than I can count.

Some things I loved in the beginning just don’t feel right anymore.

Other decisions took months because I couldn’t picture the room until I had lived in it for a while.

At first, I wondered if I was just indecisive (I am lol). Now I think something else is happening, I’m getting to know our home and every room has it’s own personality.

The way the afternoon light fills the kitchen is different from how the evening sun warms the living room.

The black accent wall in our main tv room changed how I thought about decorating the rest of the space.

The built in cubbies taught me that less really can be more.

Even our colour palette has evolved as we’ve lived here. From everything stark white to slowly warming it all up.

None of that could have happened in a weekend.

We’re often drawn to the beautiful finished rooms we see online, the spaces where every piece seems perfectly placed. What we don’t always see is the time it takes to discover what truly belongs. The experimenting, the changing your mind, the pieces you live with before deciding.

I’ve realized I’m not trying to decorate a house anymore, I’m trying to create a home that reflects how we actually live.

That takes time, and honestly, I don’t mind that anymore.

If there’s one thing this first year has taught me, it’s that homes don’t become beautiful because they’re finished, they become beautiful because they’re lived in, adjusted, questioned and slowly shaped into something that feels unmistakably yours.

So if you’ve been in your home for months, or even years and you’re still moving things around, changing your mind or waiting for the right piece…..
