The Picture Ledge that started Rustic Sunday
I can’t remember exactly where I first saw a picture ledge, but what I do remember is the feeling.
The moment I saw one, I knew I wanted one in my own home. It felt different from anything else I had seen. Simpler, warmer, less permanent than a gallery wall, yet somehow more personal.
This was around COVID, when many of us were spending more time at home and looking at our spaces with fresh eyes.
I started searching for picture ledges, convinced I’d find exactly what I wanted.
I didn’t.
I was looking for two four foot ledges in a specific stain, and no matter where I searched, I couldn’t find them. So, being the creative person I am, I had another idea.
Why not just make them myself?
I have always loved working with wood. There’s something about natural materials that instantly makes a room feel warmer and more grounded. Wood has a quiet way of bringing life into a space, and I knew I wanted that feeling in our home.
When the ledges were finally built and hanging on the wall, I quickly realized they weren’t just beautiful-they completely changed the way I decorated.
I’d never really loved gallery walls, they always felt a little too permanent. If you wanted to change one frame, it usually meant patching holes or trying to find another frame that was exactly the same size.
Picture ledges felt different. They gave me the freedom to change things whenever I wanted.
Family photos one month.
Artwork the next.
Seasonal pieces.
Books.
Small collected items.
As our story changed, the ledges changed with it and the flexibility was what I loved most.
Then another thought crossed my mind, I wonder if other people would love these as much as I do.
So I listed them on Facebook Marketplace. To my surprise, people started buying them almost immediately.
They loved being able to choose the exact length that fit their wall and stain that worked in their own home. Before long, I was making ledges in multiple stain colours, along with painted white versions, and even installing them in my daughters bedrooms to hold books, artwork and their little treasures they collected over the years.
Somewhere along the way, I started an Instagram account and gave this little idea a name:
Rustic Sunday Decor.
Over time, it simply became Rustic Sunday.
A few years later, I opened an Etsy shop and today I still build and sell picture ledges for homes across North America, while Facebook Marketplace continues to connect me with customers close to home.
Looking back, it’s funny to think that Rustic Sunday began with three pieces of wood, a little glue and a handful of nails, but maybe it was never really about the ledges. IIt was about creating a home that could keep evolving.
That’s why I still love them today.
They’re not just shelves., they’re a place for family photos, favorite books, artwork, memories and the little pieces that make a house feel like home.
Because our stories are always changing.
Maybe our homes should be allowed to change with them.
