When does a house start to feel like yours?

I’ve been thinking lately about when a house actually starts to feel like yours.

Is it when you finally paint all the rooms the colours you’ve been thinking about?

When the furniture is in the right places, the shelves are styled, and the projects you’ve been putting off are finally finished?

I don’t think it is.

I think it happens in much smaller moments.

There are moments in my own house when I suddenly stop noticing the things I still want to change and just think, I really love being here.

My TV room is one of those places.

It’s probably my favourite room in the house. At night, when the pot lights are turned down low, the lamp is on, the black wall that makes the room feel cozy and a little moody. The cubbies are filled with the things I’ve collected and chosen over time. Everything feels warm and cozy.

And sometimes I’ll sit there and look around and think, this feels like me.

Not because it’s perfect, but because I can see myself in it.

Then there’s my fireplace room, which is almost the opposite, that room isn’t finished.

There are still things I’d like to change and projects I’d like to get to. If I looked at it through the eyes of a home makeover, I could easily make a list of everything that’s missing.

And yet, it’s the room I find myself lounging in the most.

It’s where I go to relax. It’s where my dog loves to play, we call it the greeting room because he likes to bring us in there to say hello when we wake up or come home. He loves to curl up on the couch, and it’s where his toy bin lives. It’s a room that gets lived in, even though it doesn’t look finished.

And somehow, I love it anyway.

Maybe that’s when a house starts to feel like yours.

When you stop looking at every room as a project and start experiencing it as a place to live.

When you can sit down without thinking about what needs to be fixed.

When your dog has claimed a favourite spot in the house, stretched out and sleeping in the sun.

When a certain chair becomes the place you always sit.

When the light in a room at a particular time of day makes you want to stay there a little longer.

When the things around you aren’t just decorations anymore. They’re part of your everyday life.

I think it’s easy, especially when we’re constantly seeing beautiful homes online, to believe that we’ll finally feel settled when our own house looks more like the homes we’re saving.

I’ve definitely fallen into that trap.

There is always another room to change. Another colour to try. Another piece of furniture that would make a space feel more finished.

But I’ve started to wonder if constantly looking for what’s missing can make us overlook what’s already there.

Because some of the things that make a house feel like yours can’t be bought.

They’re the memories attached to a room.

The things you’ve collected slowly.

The projects you’ve done yourself.

The way your family actually uses the space.

The imperfect room where you always end up sitting.

The little details that probably wouldn’t mean anything to someone else but somehow mean everything to you.

Maybe that’s the difference between decorating a house and making it a home.

Decorating is about deciding how you want a space to look.

Living in it is about discovering how it makes you feel.

And maybe a house doesn’t start to feel like yours when there is nothing left to change.

Maybe it starts to feel like yours when you realize that, even with all the things still on your list, you already love living there.

Because perhaps home isn’t the finished version of the house you’ve been trying to create.

Maybe home is the version you’re already living in.
